The Earthquake in Yogya

Yogyakarta

was struck by an earthquake on Saturday morning,

May 27, 2006

! Uh … it was almost unbelievable for me. I lived in Yogya from September 2002 until the end of January 2006 to pursue my Master’s Degree. I took my bachelor degree also in the same town. No wonder if I consider Yogya as my second hometown.

My sister said, “When God is angry, only in less than one minute, a place can be damaged very severely.”

I responded, “Well, we really cannot command nature. Nature has its own will.”

It is related to the anticipation of

municipality

of

Yogya

to prepare the eruption of

Mount

Merapi

located not far from Yogya. It has been done for some weeks.

And at the end what happened? It was not

Mount

Merapi

that ruined Yogya and some neighboring towns, but a tectonic earthquake coming from

Indonesian

Ocean

.

One thing that made me worried. Those people from violent Islamic groups will say, “It is the sign from God for Indonesian people who have done lots of sins, who have shown many porn things. Let us atone by legalizing Pornography Bill as soon as possible.”

Don’t they realize that their forcing other people from different religion, also from the same religion but having different point of view to follow their way of thinking is violence? And God doesn’t like violence? Don’t all religions teach the adherents to love one another, to respect one another, to appreciate one another, even including to those who choose not to embrace any religion?
